~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LETTERS FROM FELLOW TRAVELERS ON THE ROAD TO RIGHT LIVELIHOOD Approach Your Life - and Your Goals - One Day at a Time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The one thing I have learned to help control stress and worry is the importance of living in a day-tight compartment. Yesterday is gone and I cannot change it. Today is new. Today gives each of us a new slate to build a positive self image that will help achieve future goals. As for tomorrow, well, it is not here yet and you cannot affect it.
A big part of my stress was worrying. I worried about yesterday and what will happen tomorrow and I lost a lot of time. Living for today will have a positive impact on lives. Today is a present. Treasure it.
Write short goals for yourself and check them off as you go. Confidence comes from achievement as well as thinking well of yourself. Determine what area you want to improve the most and work to improve one percent each day for the next year. By the end of the year, you will have improved 365 percent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FEATURE ARTICLE Would You Wake a Hibernating Bear? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
by Carol L. McClelland, PhD
Would you wake up a hibernating bear? My guess is your answer is "NO!" From what little you may know about bears, you probably have the sense that they can be a bit cranky if their long winter's nap is unnecessarily disturbed.
Would you ask yourself to come out of your time of hibernation before you are ready? My guess is your answer is "Yes." Your responsibilities, your discomfort with spending time alone in the dark, your desire to get a move on, and your friends' and family's insistence that you get over it already, all contribute to your need to push yourself out of your time of reflective retreat and into action whether you are ready or not.
How Much Longer Will I Be in Winter?
Groundhog Day is traditionally a time of estimating how much longer winter will last. Read the following three statements to see how close you are to stepping into Spring.
1) If you have energy and a clear direction, then, by all means, move out of your den and back into the world. You are ready for Spring!
2) If you are beginning to have more energy and feel more motivated, then test the weather outside. See how it feels to be out in the world again. Take small, gentle steps, don't push yourself. You are almost ready for Spring!
3) If you continue to be unclear about your future direction, to have less energy than you would like, and to struggle to make sense of the past, do yourself a favor and stick to hibernating behaviors for a while longer. You will benefit from more time in Winter.
The Value of Hibernating
Hibernation allows you to stay safe while you feel vulnerable, unclear, and emotional. Rather than trying to find the nurturing you need in the harsh, unpredictable, potentially stormy outside world, turn inward. Use your reflection time to feed your soul.
Read something that gives you a new perspective on life. If you haven't read The Seasons of Change yet, now would be a great time to do so. Start by reading the Winter chapters to get some immediate support in what you are experiencing.
~ Meditate or sit quietly listening to music
~ Express yourself with art or movement
~ Walk in nature
~ Talk with a close friend or therapist who understands, honors, and supports you where you are right now.
Remember, the time you spend hibernating is not unproductive time. On the contrary, it can be one of the most life-changing times in your life. One fact you may not know about hibernating bears is that the females give birth to their cubs while hibernating - nursing them and protecting them from the cold until they are mature enough to survive out in the world once spring finally arrives.
Give the brand new parts of yourself the same protected time to grow and become strong before you try to test yourself out in the world. Even though it is often hard to be alone, the strength you find as a result of this time is exactly what allows you to blossom fully in the Spring.
Hang in there! Spring really is around the corner.
